Some SiriusXM listeners have said they will cancel their subscription to the premium satellite radio service after it fired shock jock Anthony Cumia of the popular show Opie & Anthony for a slew of racist remarks he made on Twitter.
Cumia, 53, was fired for posting “racially-charged and hate-filled” remarks on Twitter, per a statement issued by SiriusXM, which the company deemed “wholly inconsistent with what SiriusXM represents.”
Those remarks, which Anthony has since deleted, stemmed from an incident with a black lady in Times Square. Anthony says he was taking pictures in the early morning hours, when the black lady, who Anthony alleges walked into the frame of one of his shots, began to physically assault him. Here are some of his twitter updates after the attack:
It’s really open season on white people in this day and age. No recourse. Fight back and you’re a racist. The predators know this. Good luck
There’s a deep seeded problem with violence in the black community. Try to address it and you’ll be exiled to racistville. But it’s real
The switch to violence is immediate. No discussion, just violence. When will THAT be addressed? Oh, right, never. Slavery did it? Oh, ok
The automatic jump to violence in that community is astounding. No discussion. It’s start punching at the least little thing. Uncivilized!
Cumia posted photos of the woman, whom he recalled “punched me in the face,” then “punched me 5 more times,” before launching into a political diatribe on the social media microblog which would span the next several days, saying at one point, “I hope she gets killed.”
SiriusXM has released a statement confirming Anthony Cumia’s termination.
SiriusXM has terminated its relationship with Anthony Cumia of the Opie & Anthony channel. The decision was made, and Cumia informed, late Thursday, July 3 after careful consideration of his racially-charged and hate-filled remarks on social media. Those remarks and postings are abhorrent to SiriusXM, and his behavior is wholly inconsistent with what SiriusXM represents.
“I wouldn’t apologize, I’m not sorry, talk to you all after a great summer!” – Anthony Cumia
