Artie Lange Says He Could Face A Year In County Jail For Drug Possession Charges

Former Howard Stern Show co-host Artie Lange was arrested for heroin and cocaine possession by the Hoboken Police Department on Sunday, March 12, 2017.

Lange was caught with the drugs by police in his home garage.

“Officers responded to the address on a report of someone attempting to enter a vehicle that was parked inside the garage,” the spokesperson said.

Officer Zeszotarski was able to observe what appeared to be suspected heroin and cocaine inside the vehicle. A male later identified as Artie Lange approached the officers and confirmed it was his vehicle. A search of his person also revealed several more bags of suspected heroin along with cocaine.

Artie responded to the arrest via twitter. “I wish I could tell u how my story ends. I hope it’s being old & smiling because of unique memories. But I’m such a flawed person guys. Tryin!”

While performing on stage at The Wellmont Theater on March 24th Artie mentioned that he could face a year in county jail. “Don’t do drugs, guys, honestly. Kids, look at me. I’m 24 years old.”

EXPRESS: For those who haven’t read your book, can you tell us how you got hooked on heroin after kicking coke?
» LANGE: I fell into it on the road one day, as I documented in my book. A comedy club manager in a certain city, I told [him] I was taking a lot of pain killers to deal with the shitty plane rides and hotels, and somehow getting back to work on Monday morning at 6 [a.m.] — which every comic I worked with on the road told me they didn’t know how I did that. I dunno how I’ve done it either; I’ve done it for almost a decade. The guy got me in touch with a dealer for heroin because it was cheaper. And the name of the chapter of the book — the guy actually said this — “Do heroin, it’s better for your liver.” I was popping 50 Vicodin a day, so in his own way he probably had a point.

» EXPRESS: How long have you been clean now?
» LANGE: I hired two off-duty New York City cops who specialize in this to get me off heroin once and all. As of April [2009] I’ve been clean from heroin; haven’t touched it. I lost 50 pounds right away — being on Subutex, this opiate blocker [to quell heroin cravings], helps you gain a lot of weight. I’ve always been heavy, but never near 300. … Anyway, I got off the Subutex, lost the weight, got healthier, [but] I still have bouts with depression.

Arites back

Howard kicked off the show noting that Artie was back in the studio, proving Fred – who’d speculated that Artie might only return as a guest – wrong. Fred welcomed Artie back: “I’m happy for Artie. I hope he’s doing well.” Artie confessed: “Listen, I had what you might call a mini-nervous breakdown…I was in therapy doing well and I had a pattern of repeating mistakes in my life and that’s something my father had.”
Artie added that the charity gig for a pralyzed guy in a wheel chair compounded his anxiety about aging: “I hadn’t really been next to [a paraplegic] since my old man and it affected me.” Artie said didn’t go to therapy when he returned home: “I made myself physically ill. I was dry-heaving. I was sweating.” His girlfriend cared for him while he convalesced: “I love my girlfriend. I’m in love.”
Artie said he’d canceled most of his gigs after the end of the year: “2010 I will not be on the road…this schedule and the road is bad. And this is more important – of course.” He might even do a detox diet: “Stacy wants me to do the Robin thing…I just like cheeseburgers so much. I don’t know if I can be a part of it.” Artie claimed he was glad he didn’t turn back to heroin: “I was close to going to the bad shit because I just wanted anything to feel better…you start to question everything in your life.”
