It’s been more than a year and a half since Artie Lange, the ragged and randy comedian and sometime sidekick to Howard Stern, was last heard live on the radio, a streak that came to an end on Wednesday night. On a Fox Sports Radio program hosted by his friend and fellow comedian Nick DiPaolo (who in turn was filling in for Tony Bruno), Mr. Lange joined the show to take questions from listeners and riff on current events. According to a live blog of the program posted by Punchline magazine, discussion of the sad circumstances that kept Mr. Lange off the airwaves was not abundant, though Mr. Lange said he’s been getting sober at a rehabilitation facility in West Palm Beach, Fla., and Mr. DiPaolo introduced him to the show by joking, “You might have seen him on ‘Intervention.’”
The Web site The Comic’s Comic posts this audio segment from the broadcast, in which a caller asks Mr. Lange if he’s considering a return to “The Howard Stern Show.” Mr. Lange replied, “That would be the greatest thing ever, but listen, I was on the greatest show of all time for about nine years and I put them in a very awkward situation to say the least, so what am I going to do? But I love them all and they were great to me.”
‘I put them in a very awkward situation’
Howard Stern Show writer Sal Governale says Artie Lange is currently working on his second book, a follow up to his bestselling ‘Too Fat to Fish’.
When an audience member asked Richard and Sal at their comedy show if Artie would return to the Howard Stern Show, Governale gave this reply.
“All right, I’m going to tell you about Artie Lange. A lot of people ask us this and I’ll tell you personally. After Artie went through his unfortunate bout of personal demons, I had the opportunity to speak to him and Artie is really working on making himself better. He suffers from clinical depression. Artie is just trying to better himself. And he really is working hard at it. He’s working on his second book.”
One of the many baby gorilla superfans made a compilation of his favorite clips. Of course, all the rights to the clips belong to SirusXM.

Will we ever see Artie back on the Howard Stern Show? One can only speculate but…
Howard at one point said, ‘look, go take as much time as you need to get better. When you come back, you have a job.’ What else could you ask a boss to say?” – Artie Lange
This is disappointing news for all Artie Lange fans but reports suggest that the Howard Stern Show sidekick will not be available to shoot for the show till this year end on medical grounds. Artie Lange is reportedly still ill and has been advised to take rest before he can resume his sessions with the Howard Stern Show.
In a statement released to the media, Gary Dell’Abate, producer of the Howard Stern Show confirms that Artie Lange is still recovering and his fans will have to wait a while before they get to see their favorite comedian back on the show. The comedian is reportedly in the last stages of his recovery, but is still not well enough to start work on a regular basis.

Howard took a call from Pittsburgh Pete who said that he thinks Artie has fooled them again with this suicide thing because he thinks he’s just doing that to take time off. Howard said this is the real deal with Artie and it’s not the kind of thing that he’d do to take time off. Howard said this was a really serious thing and how he survived it was beyond him. Pete said if you really want to go then you’ll find a way to do it. Howard said he thinks that Artie really wanted to check out. Robin said that it was an accident that his mother had come by that day. She was the one who found him.
Artie Lange was rushed to a local hospital in New Jersey today for undisclosed reasons.
A rep for Lange tells TMZ:
“I can confirm that Artie is in the hospital. Artie has chosen to keep all information on this matter between him and his doctor. There will be no further comment.”
